“Hallmark” says “I treat my employees like shit”
Yesterday (1/20 EST) less than 30 minutes into my shift I was called into the back by my manager. She informed me that she had been watching me on the cameras ever since a disgruntled customer had called to complain about another employee who had been working when I was. Apparently she had said something that upset the customer (not at the time but several days later) and I was given the blame. Typical. While watching me on the cameras she had seen me reading behind the register that Tuesday and found this unacceptable. She then said she was upset to find that I had read behind the register and was leaning against the desk behind the counter the previous night and this warranted my firing. I said to her, “There were other people reading” to which she replied “Well, I don’t know about that but if other people are reading, disciplinary measures will be taken against them as well.” Which means nothing will happen to anyone but me even though everyone has read a book at the register at one time or another and it has been on camera. While I do not wish any of my former coworkers to even be written up for something so silly as reading, I believe my firing to be unjust and unfair. Because of this, I wrote a letter to the office which I will post behind a cut.
Subject: Employee response to disciplinary measures taken at 824
To whom it may concern,
On January 20, 2012 I was fired from my position as key holder at Banner’s Hallmark #824. I do believe this action to be unjust and unfair.
There has, in my opinion, been a long- standing problem with incompetence among management for quite some time. [Name], the manager, is a very harsh woman with unrealistic standards for those in positions of authority. She constantly made it quite clear to me that if I did not adjust my character to that of hers then my behavior was unacceptable. Last year I was written up twice and while one time was just, the other was totally ridiculous. I was written up for not being at a store meeting because of a prescheduled exam I had to take for school. Apparently I should have rescheduled my exam so I could attend the store meeting. Upon this second write- up, she informed me that if I got one more I would be fired. I realized then that I would probably never meet her standards.
I also noticed in [manager] a near complete lack of knowledge of the operation of store equipment. There were numerous times where she asked me how to do simple returns, post voids, etc. There were also numerous times I was required to make a difficult decision about how to proceed with certain shipments because she had no idea about how to proceed herself. On top of this was, I felt, inadequate training. This has led to the card sections in the store being in constant disarray and to myself learning something recently I apparently should have known all along. I believe this is all due to a lack of competence on part of the store manager,[manager’s full name]. In addition her continued indiscretion in dealing with interpersonal conflicts has led to me personally being threatened by another employee (who was, I believe never written up for the event). Because of these inadequacies, the store has been rife with ill- opinion of her.
I feel you should know about these things that have gone on (and there are many more) so that you know what type of person you have “running” your store. I was fired because on the Tuesday before my firing I was noticed on the security cameras to be reading at the desk while on the clock. I admit that my behavior was inappropriate. I believe, due to the many hours I put in and my continued perseverance with a management so undeserving of decent employees, my punishment was completely unjust. As far as I am aware, no one else has ever been fired for reading at the register. The entire time I was employed at the store, everyone read at the desk at some time or another. If management says they do not know, then they chose to ignore it. That’s a fact. When it’s slow, we pick up books from around the store and read them. I was given no formal warning of inappropriate behavior and unceremoniously fired. That night, everyone working was reading at the register, not just me. Were the other people working reprimanded for also reading? I do not know but I have a feeling they were not. [Manager] has been unhappy with me for quite some time (since I started?) and has made it obvious that she has been looking for an opportunity to be rid of me. I find that a sad fact, since I was willing to continue working there for some time despite the ill treatment I have received.
I am the sole provider in my household while my husband finishes his degree at [University]. I will need to be finding another job as soon as possible and having the experience as a key holder at the store was invaluable. I think it would only be fair to adjust my termination status from “fired” to something else. I do not expect it but it would be nice to be able to tell someone that even though the store was run by someone with obvious favoritism and obvious disdain for her employees, the head office was fair and just.
Thank you,
Genevieve [last name]
So far I have received no reply. I am currently in the process of trying to find an email for corporate HR to send a similar email. I have a sneaking suspicion that my manager had heard of my intention to put in my notice sometime by the end of February (due to ongoing health issues; not because of the continued rudeness and incompetence displayed by both the manager and assistant manager) and, tired of people constantly quitting after working with her closely, decided she had had enough and fired me before I quit. My only goal in this situation is to get my termination status changed so I don’t have an even more difficult time of finding a job than I already have. (¬_¬)ノ
